It contains the highest Nb and Ta (among all the analyzed minerals, ~ 103 times chondritic values), and Zr and Hf (Table DR7), but relatively lower REEs than titanite (Fig. 4g). The concentrations of HFSEs in titanite are commonly less than those in rutile (Table DR7).

We present high-resolution La-ICP-MS U-Pb age and Hf isotope data on zircons from 10 plutonic samples covering the magmatic belt along a length of 200 km in the northern Argentinian Puna. The xenocrystic and magmatic zircon age data have a wide spread between 2700 Ma and 440 Ma.
The results indicate the presence of a common crustal component in the magma sources of both mafic and felsic volcanics, leading to proposition of a new mechanism for the origin of bimodal magmatism. Zircon U-Pb dating yields consistent ages of 134–125 Ma for the bimodal volcanism.

These zircons do not, however, show apparent deviations in their Hf isotope composition from the bulk zircon population. The initial Hf isotope compositions in most zircons (except for one zircon) indicate, in agreement with the initial Nd isotope character of the whole rocks, a predominantly juvenile character of the granites.
